Weekend Writing Warriors #8sunday
The Weekend Writing Warriors share 8-10 sentences over the weekend. Here are mine from the start of a historical novel set in Victorian London called THE PAINTED HEART.
This is at the start of the book when Miss Elzpeth James, governess to the Hurley twin’s collection of girls, is told that she has been chosen as Mr Blackburn’s Painted Sister.
London, 1898.
Elspeth put up her hand, “Wait? What have we agreed?”
“Why, that if there was someone who did suit.” … “we’d hand them over to him as quickly as possible,” the Hurley twins said as one started and the other finished the sentence. They then rose simultaneously. “I think he mentioned to you what he required, Miss James.”
It hit her then what they meant, it was just that the idea was so inconceivable. She stood up suddenly, the chair fell back and thudded on the carpet.
“Me? You want me to be the canvas for him? For me to be his Painted Sister?”
“Decorum dear,” Miss Hurley raised an eyebrow at her awkwardness.
“But the girls?”
“There are others who can do what you do for them, Miss James, but it seems only you will do for Mr. Blackburn.”
